Joint Industry Priorities for Delegate Input (DRAFT) – Pork Industry Forum

Sustainability

  • (NPPC Responsibility) Advocate for common sense approaches for all aspects pork production to lessen pork’s impact on the environment and its people. Engage and receive credit for what producers are doing as stewards of the land by promoting soil health, conserving water, efficiently using nutrients and caring for their animals.
  • (NPB Responsibility) Fund and conduct research, including on farm pilot projects, and develop resources that validate and help all farmers on local, state and national levels get credit for their environmental practices.
  • (NPB Responsibility) Finance and lead development of a body of scientifically valid research, and associated third-party experts, to counter misinformation and address local community concerns about the public health impact of livestock production.

Trade

  • (NPPC Responsibility) Continue to expand export markets by gaining access to new markets by eliminating tariffs, non-tariff barriers (e.g., Sanitary and Phytosanitary issues, Import Permits, etc.), establishing sound international standards and keeping existing markets open.
  • (NPB Responsibility) Identify international markets with the most potential for U.S. Pork then fund, and leverage USDA matching funds, to conduct research and coordinate in-country promotions to develop and/or expand demand for U.S. Pork.

Social License to Operate

  • (NPPC Responsibility) Prevent burdensome mandates by engaging regulators, legislators, retail and foodservice, and the public to limit or eliminate marketplace disruptions (e.g., Ballot Initiatives (California Proposition 12), activist pressure, EPA Waters of the US, etc.) and when necessary, litigate on behalf of producers.
  • (NPB Responsibility) Partner with state associations to develop and fund trust and image campaigns designed to overcome myths, protect your freedom to operate and ensure consumers see pork as a nutritious product they feel good about buying.

Foreign Animal Disease (FAD) Prevention and Protection

  • (NPPC Responsibility) Advocate for governmental measures and resources to prevent the introduction of an FAD. Also, advocate for policies, at the state and federal level, in the event of an outbreak to allow for consistency of response, including permitted movements, in control areas and continuity of business outside of control areas.
  • (NPB Responsibility) Prevent FAD entry by leading industry and government efforts to identify risks, fund research and develop tools to be deployed at the state and federal level (e.g., through USDA and Customs and Border Protection).
  • (NPB Responsibility) Prepare for FAD response by developing and distributing tools, resources and emergency response training for producers and animal health officials, including Secure Pork Supply plans, AgView and funding mass euthanasia and disposal techniques.

Business/Competition Pressures

  • (NPPC Responsibility) Support legislative and regulatory change in the following areas:
    • Streamline the visa application process for additional labor sources outside of the U.S.
    • Seek increased transparency in the marketplace through programs like Livestock Mandatory Reporting (LMR).
    • Defend and protect producers against undue tax burdens.
  • (NPB Responsibility) Use consumer insights and research to encourage grocery stores and restaurants to promote products, like ground pork, to increase sales.
  • (NPPC Responsibility) Develop and fund research on the impact of policy or regulations forcing changes to farm practices, at the state or national level, which can be leveraged by stakeholders to advocate on behalf of the industry.
  • (NPB Responsibility) Develop, fund and coordinate coalitions to monitor, anticipate and strategically respond to attacks on the meat industry.

Grassroots Engagement

  • (NPPC Responsibility) Activate producers through industry programs that engage elected officials to tell our story.
  • (NPB Responsibility) Build a continuous pipeline of diverse leaders to speak on behalf of the industry in a variety of venues.

Because Checkoff dollars cannot be used to influence legislation or governmental action pursuant to the Pork Act and Order, NPB is prohibited from endorsing any of the proposed activities by NPPC that constitute such influence, and such endorsement should not be implied.
